Event 4: Finding your Fun

If you’re like many parents of teens, you are just coming out of the years in which free time was filled with youth sports and other extracurricular activities. Because you were focused on being the best sideline fans and audience cheering section, you may have let some fun hobbies of your own fall to the wayside. Or perhaps you feel ready to pick up a new activity in this life chapter to develop a new skill and meet new friends.

Together we will explore–and try out!--some of the more popular post-kid activities in our local area. This is such an important element of being a college mom: growing your own interests while the kids are launching. Not only do you get to dig into something fun, but you model for them what it’s like to be out of your comfort zone too.

Event 5: Academic & Career Directions

College students and parents often experience tension over their longterm planning: major pathways, eventual careers, and professional experiences like internships. These stressors come as no surprise, since the world of study and work is much more complex than in prior generations. Problems arise when parents take too big of a role in this decision, but also when they are too hands-off, particularly for young adults who need some proactive guidance. Career development offices and academic advising exist on every campus, but are often underused and/or miss the mark on what each student needs at any particular point.

Together we will look at the needs and opportunities as parents to provide a balance of support and independence to our college students as they maneuver through college pathways and eventual career choices.

Celebration Event:  Milestones

Time goes so fast, especially the college years. In the famous words of Ferris Bueller “if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.”

Together we will talk about how to mark the progress and growth of each milestone through the college years–those of our children and ours as well.

Join us for a special retreat session to toast our accomplishments and dialogue about what was learned in the school year that we will use again in the coming years.
